Chapter 19: Capture Idealism

I’m in love! Oooh, it’s good feeling, isn’t it? Happy song and happy dance time! Lalalalalalala! And I feel like I’m going to sing happiness eternally! It’s odd. Love is wordless. It can’t be expressed with language. Well, it can. There are loads of poets and writers and bards who sing soppy love ballads. But they don’t capture love at all! They capture idealism. They’re false. I don’t think they’ve actually been in love. Not proper love, anyhow.
Simone is wonderful. I’ve just got back from a rendez-vous with her. I took her to a tea rooms and paid for her, of course. This was the first time that I have been with Simone without her being chaperoned. Of course, I didn’t take advantage or anything. That’s not me. But it was much more relaxed. We were much more open with each other. And it was wonderful! Just wonderful.
Father had his candidate interview for the position of mayor of Reliance today. All very exciting. Mother’s very proud, of course. She’s out at a function with her ladies. The social scene. It’s amazing how much politics is to do with the wives. Not about the manifestos or policies at all, really. It’s just a popularity contest.
And I have my part to play too. My relationship with Simone has to be a clean slate. Nothing sordid. And I have my first book being published next week - very exciting! Barely eighteen and I already on my way to being a prominent member of society. And to have Simone at my side! Fantastic! We have arranged to meet at another date prior to the presentation of the mayoral candidates. It is almost a dead-cert that Father will at least get that far, so to have Simone at my side before the town… I’d be dead proud.
In other news of life (it’s all going so well, you know! I feel invincible, immortal!), I keep on finding out new things about the stories that I read and tell to everyone. I mean, they are just fairy stories. We grew up with them. But I have odd suspicions about them. They seem connected… I’ve been to other areas of the kingdom: where Etrisse used to stand, the eastern forests, and to the kingdom of Binon. And I hear new, different tales. But they all similar. Not thematically, necessarily. And not morally. But they all have a feature in common. A crown. An enchanted crown. They might have different powers, do different things, but there is often an enchanted crown.
It interests me. I want to delve further. I hear they have good stories in Thripp. So if I can I’d love to travel there. It’d be great to take Simone with me. Maybe as my wife! That was rather a big jump, wasn’t it! We’ve only been courting for a few weeks. If that! We shall see. It’s all very vague at the moment.
Until next time, Journal, when I shall be out of breath from singing my happy song and worn out from dancing my happy dance!
Sam
__________
The doorbell rings and Jen is startled, her heart suddenly pounding. She puts Sam’s diary to one side and leaves her bedroom. She looks down the stairs at the front door. Several ominous silhouettes loom behind it. One of the silhouettes moves an arm and the bell rings again. Jen cannot hear anything from Morab wherever he is. She slowly descends down the stairs. The bell rings again for the third time. Jen does not speed up. She reaches the door, unlocks the bolts, turns the key, rotates the doorknob ninety degrees and pulls it towards her. The sunlight streams in and the silhouettes vanish for several seconds as Jen’s eyes adjust to the noon brightness.
Jen’s eyes stop squinting and come back into focus. Standing before her are three ladies, grinning giddily. “Can I help you?” Jen asks. She means to sound polite but it just sounds groggy.
“We saw that you were new to the neighbourhood and we wanted to make you feel welcome. We all know how difficult it is to move to a new area,” one of the ladies explains, smiling.
“Your kindness is much appreciated but you should go and never call again. Thank you.” And Jen closes the door abruptly and begins to return to her room.
“They could have helped you.”
“Leave it.”
“I won’t.”
“Leave me alone, Sharon. Go for a walk or something.”
“I’m not going to leave you.”
“How noble,” Jen replies drily. “How can you actually help though? How can you stop Morab from hitting me and hurting me and raping me? You can’t. You can only watch on. And that’s awful.”
“It’s not my fault.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I just don’t know what to do.”
“I don’t think turning away kind and interested women is going to help you escape.”
“Stop it, Sharon! I don’t know what I can do! Whatever I do, Morab will follow me! A women with no choice but to wear an enchanted Crown can never disappear. There will always be rumours and gossip. And I’ll become a legend. A myth.”
“Then take the Crown off yourself and be done with it!” Sharon barks.
“I can’t. Because I want to live. And I like living with you. I don’t want to condemn us both to darkness and nightmare.”
“But if living is a nightmare…”
“It will sort itself out. Life always does. Tergen will return and save me.”
“But when will that be? He doesn’t know where we are!”
“Freedom is worth the wait.” Jen picks up her book and begins to read again. “Sam was always so happy. He was happy all the time I knew him and he’s happy in his diaries. He keeps me going through all of this. He may be dead, but he keeps me alive and he gives me hope.”
“And I feel sick. Your sweet monologuing about Sam is nauseating! Enough with your soundbite speeches and see the reality. You are being abused and you are holding out for some hero to come and save you. A hero who probably will never come.”
“You’re wrong. Tergen will come.”
“What about those women? Why can’t they save you?”
“They don’t understand.”
Sharon screams with frustration. “You are Impossible!” And she storms away.

Chapter 15: All In His Stride

Dear Diary,
Sharon just told me that Sam is dead.
I don’t really know what to think about this. It’s a very surreal situation. I’m sad, but distanced from it all. I wish I wasn’t. I wish I was more obviously affected. I feel a bit guilty for having not cried yet.
Morab got angry and trashed the front room. I tried to help. Not to trash the room, but with his dealing of the news. He accidentally pushed me and I fell to the ground. It’s nothing really. I’ve got a small cut on my left temple, but I’m sure he didn’t mean it. He’s just sad about Sam.
Sharon followed Sam to the Crowners of the Light meeting. She was concerned for him and wanted to make sure he’d be ok. But that didn’t work out so well… He was stabbed apparently. Right through the chest with a sword.
I just shivered and I feel a bit sick having written that. Sharon told me that they dragged his body out of the fortress and just chucked it… him into the empty moat. He of all people did not deserve that.
He’s really the only person who’s been there for me. Mum and Dad were too busy looking after the business and Rosa to properly care for me. And I suppose I pushed people away from me, so I never received much love from the rest of the village. Apart from Maj. But after the whole incident after Rosa’s death and ReNay, there was only ever Sam. I miss him now. The first person I’ve ever really appreciated. I’ve kind of appreciated Maj, I suppose. He did a lot for me… But, I mean, Sam did so much. He saved me!
After ReNay had put the Crown on my head, I went really mad. I can remember that I was screaming and shouting. I was writhing my hands together because I couldn’t take the Crown off but I wanted to. I was a frenzy. I fell off the stage but Sam caught me and he whisked me away from the town centre, down a dark alley. I can’t personally recall why no one else saw us, or why no one followed us. Sam told me that whilst I was rushing about onstage, ReNay and the hooded men started to fight the Bridgeside Brigade and the police, and all the townsfolk ran back to their homes so that they wouldn’t get caught up in the feud. I suppose that in all the pandemonium, Sam and I went unnoticed. Sam and I watched as the small group of Crowners slaughtered the Bridgeside Brigade. The Brigadier fell to the ground, groaning. I saw his wife dart out of their house, running to her dead husband. And as she knelt beside her husband, she too was murdered mercilessly. I fell to my knees, sobbing. I was crying even before then, but I had reached a new level of raw emotion.
I can’t remember how much it all went on for, but I know that Sam’s hand was on my shoulder the whole time. And… Yes! I grabbed his knees, hugging them. Holding him close. Then he knelt down beside me and he told me that he would look after me and keep me safe. He told me that he’d take me to a place where I would be safe and where no one could ever hurt me. And I believed him. His voice felt honest. In that moment, I trusted him. They were the first words he said to me, and I knew that he was my friend. I knew that he was someone special and new. This must be beginning to sound a bit like a tribute. A rubbish one at that. I’ll just end with the fact that he was there for me at a time I needed him - a guardian angel.
He explained everything to me about the Crowns and about the Crowners and about the Keepers of the Crowns. He told me all about Morab and Tergen. And he talked all about his childhood. And he always asked the right questions at the right times. He just seemed to get me.
And then there was Sharon. She’s been reading over what I’ve been writing and is somewhat annoyed that I haven’t mentioned her once. I can’t really remember first seeing Sharon. I was so frantic when I was first ‘crowned’ (a term that sounds horribly ominous) that I didn’t really notice her presence. It wasn’t until Sam and I were sneaking to the river and we were hiding underneath the bridge that I was really made aware of her. This dazzling blonde woman who I didn’t recognise. She was annoying at first. A bit of a pest. She wants me to retract that but I won’t. This diary is supposed to be an accurate account of true events. Sam told me to sleep. He must have thought I was being a complete schizophrenic. Speaking to something that he couldn’t see and just generally being a bit insane. I settled down and went to sleep, with Sam and Sharon watching over me. The next morning, Sam hired a boat and the three of us rowed up the river, right until we got to the waterfall. It did not occur to me that I knew that, and the trip would be a wasted one. And so we sailed back. Sam took it all in his stride, laughing at himself. And so we walked.
We walked for so many days, but Sam ushered me along and kept me going. And I got used to Sharon talking too. That was weird. Especially when Sam and Sharon wanted to speak to each other. I just became a relay girl, relaying what one said to the other. That gets frustrating. But we’re really getting on now.
We arrived at the town of Rypt and we walked through the suburbia. It all felt very clean and green. Very rich, nothing like the dirtiness of Bridgeside. I remember feeling embarrassed about my background. Anyway, we finally ended up outside number 14, Druid’s Grove, which is just off Rose Street. A detached house with a well-kept front garden and a bay window in the front room.
He introduced me to the Keepers of the Crowns. I’m scared about how the Keepers will carry on without him. Tergen is out in the field and is still clueless about everything that’s gone on. And Morab is totally freaked out. I suppose he’s terrified to even contemplate what the future holds. All his plans and long-term schedules are ruined.
I actually wonder whether his anger is for the loss of Sam’s life or for the inconvenience it has caused. But that’s between you and me, Diary. And Sharon (who insists on inclusion).
For Sam, I miss you. And thank you for saving me.
Dear Diary,
Morab has just told me to pack up. Our position has been compromised and we are fleeing to a safe house. Seeing as I don’t have any of my own stuff, I have filled a bag with some of Sam’s clothes and books. I don’t want them to get lost or damaged. All his work should not go to waste.
Sharon says I should mention that Morab dragged me upstairs by my hair. I’ve only put it to appease Sharon. Morab is under a lot of pressure, and I feel like I’m in the way. He’ll calm down once we are in the safe house.

Chapter 10: The Challenge Was Rejected

Keepers of the Crowns Monthly Meeting Minutes
Date: The fiftieth day of Riff
Attended by: Morab, Tergen, Sam, Jen, Sharon
Chair: Morab
Minutes taken by: Tergen
Agenda:
Further enquiries in Bridgeside.
Crowners of the Light Biannual meeting
Jennifer’s Position within Keepers of the Crown
_____
Further enquiries in Bridgeside.
Due to the tragic deaths of the Bridgeside children Angus and Rosa, further enquiries are required to be carried out in the town. This role will involve looking into the discovery of the Crown by the young man Maj, the cave in which it was found, and wherever the search will take them.
Morab suggested that this position be taken by Tergen. Although the position was formerly filled by Sam, recent events have changed circumstances. This decision by Morab was contested by Sam, but the challenge was rejected.
Tergen will leave for Bridgeside from the Druid’s Grove in a fortnight. Contact must be made to the Druid’s Grove within six weeks before he is assumed dead and further plans will be made to fill the absence.
Crowners of the Light Biannual meeting
The Crowners of the Light’s biannual meeting will be held on the 77th of Riff. Sam shall maintain his position as a mole. He shall attend and feed the Crowners of the Light with false information regarding the Crown of the Fire Elemental. All documents have been forged and provided by Tergen.
Sam will report back with any other information provided for by the Crowners of the Light. An alibi has also been provided for his presence at Bridgeside should ReNay or any other Crowner present at Bridgeside enquire.
Jennifer’s Position within Keepers of the Crowns
The Keepers of the Crowns are happy to welcome Jennifer [Jen] and Sharon [the spirit of the Crown of Immortality] to their number. Jen’s role within the company is yet to be defined. However, her connection to the Crown of Immortality makes her a valuable asset and a due to her life force being connected to the Crown as a consequence of Sam’s failure, it is our duty to care for and provide for Jen.
Sam added that Jen will also bring a female viewpoint and attitude towards our mission.
Jen noted that as the only female, she refuses to be expected to cook, to clean and be the “mum” of the grove. This is a reasonable request.
Next Meeting: To be officially announced, but it is likely to be on Sam’s return.

Chapter 7: We Used To Have Fun

7.1 EXT. KINGDOM FAITHFUL COUNTRYSIDE - DAY

JEN (19, independent country girl, brazen and brash) is marching along a dirt track. SAM (32, quirky druid, small fish in large pond - the water of which is getting hotter) and SHARON (appears 30, child-like, vindictive) follow her.

[Sharon is only visible to Jen. Sam cannot see or hear Sharon.]

JEN
Stop following me!

SAM
I won’t, Jen.

SHARON
He won’t, Jen.

JEN
You can shut up and all.

SAM
Who are you talking to?

JEN
I don’t know anymore.

SAM
Explain to me.

JEN
No.

SAM
Why not?

SHARON
Yeah, why not?

Jen stops, holding her head with angst.

JEN
Stop it!

SAM
Stop what?

JEN
Not you.

SAM
Then who?

JEN
Her.

SAM
And who is she?

JEN
I don’t know. But she keeps following me and talking to me and no one else can see her. Unless everyone’s playing a massive prank. And if it is, then it is not funny.

SHARON
He can’t see or hear me.

SAM
There have been mentions of an entity that accompanies the Crown, viewable only to the wearer. Whether this is a spirit or a hallucinogenic fiction, I don’t know. But it is for you and your eyes only.

SHARON
How dare he! As if I exist for you. It is you who exist for me!

JEN
She didn’t like that.

SAM
She can hear me?

JEN
Yup. And she says that I exist for her.

SHARON
That’s right. He does not know what he’s talking about.

SAM
Does she have a name?

SHARON
It’s Sharon.

JEN
Sharon.

SAM
Sharon?

SHARON
Yes, Sharon! Got a problem with that?

JEN
No, he doesn’t.

SAM
I don’t what?

JEN
Have a problem.

SAM
With what?

SHARON
My name!

JEN
Her name.

SAM
Of course not.

SHARON
Good.

JEN
(exasperated)
Why is this so difficult?

SAM
I am sorry, Jen, but you’ll have to report what Sharon says. Alright?

JEN
Fine.

SAM
Sharon, what is life like for you when someone is not wearing the Crown?

SHARON
All darkness and despair. Loneliness and emptiness.

JEN
Darkness. Despair. Loneliness. Emptiness.

SAM
Anything else?

SHARON
I see their faces. All of their faces. Lunging, lurching at me. Screaming at me. Torturing me. They hate me. They blame me.

JEN
She sees faces. Lunging and screaming at her. They hate her. They blame her.

SAM
Whose faces are they?

SHARON
Of my friends. Of the ones that played with me. The ones who wore the Crown. We used to have fun together. Not anymore. They abandoned me.

JEN
They’re the faces of the people who have worn the Crown. She says that they abandoned her.

SAM
How did they abandon you, Sharon?

SHARON
They didn’t want to play anymore. So I took them. I left their bodies and took their souls so that we could play forever.

JEN
She took their souls when they took the Crown off. She says that it is because they didn’t want to play any more.

SAM
What about those who wanted to play, but were forced not to?

SHARON
They are with me too. Because they want to play.

JEN
She sees them too. They want to play. Can you see Rosa?

SHARON
Yes.

JEN
Can you speak to her?

SHARON
Only in the darkness.

JEN
Can they speak to each other?

SHARON
I don’t know. They just scream at me.

SAM
How many are there, Sharon?

SHARON
Hundreds.

JEN
Hundreds. And one day I will join them.

SAM
Are they dreams? Are they nightmares? Or is that their afterlife, Sharon?

JEN
What will happen to me?

SHARON
I don’t know! I don’t know! Stop asking me these questions!

JEN
She wants us to stop.

SAM
Fair enough. We shall continue walking. I am taking you the Druid’s Grove, Jen. You will be safe there.

JEN
Safe from who?

SAM
I wish I was sure.
